Man, did I dislike this book. I'll admit, it is well-written. I just didn't ENJOY reading any of it. Thankfully I held in there for the last story, which was nice, but certainly didn't redeem all the chapters that came before. All of these stories just struck me as joyless. Generally I like my fiction on the darker side, so I'm not sure why this stuff bothered me so much. I think it was too much of a vibe of, "people are awful, life sucks and then you die" over and over again. Yea
...h. I get that. And I'm not looking to read stories that are full of unicorns and puppies. But I needed to feel for these characters and largely didn't because they seemed to have given up and been therefore unworthy of the fight.

I ordered this collection of stories after hearing George Saunders read and comment on a story by Charles D'Ambrosia from the New Yorker. There was such charm, intelligence and artistic play in his conversation with the NYer editor about one's approach to darker material in fiction that I knew in advance I'd like his work. Yet it surprised me completely when his social comments on class veered into some of the most imaginative science fiction since Vonnegut. I'll definitely reread it and probably raise it to a 5-star as I recognize how deeply he's worked his themes into my outlook now.
